【内容简介】
We develop a two-region two-sector overlapping generation model with endogenous inter-regional migration to quantify the joint effect of migration and population ageing on sectoral transformation. Introducing two novel demand-side mechanisms, the migrant-demand effect and the age-demand effect, this paper argues that existing studies underestimate the migrate-out region (North)'s sectoral transformation while overestimating the migrate-in region (South)'s structural change. Focusing on China, whose unprecedented structural change serves as an ideal object of study in this topic, we find that migration and the induced population aging jointly contribute to about 50% of the transformation in the south while these two factors have contradicting effects in the North.
