【内容简介】
An emerging literature studies the effects of housing price on individuals’ subjective wellbeing, physical health, psychological and mental health using data from developed countries. The results are inconclusive depending on samples, methods, and individual groups and many studies have not addressed well the endogeneity issue. We use the individual level panel data sets, the 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 China Family Panel Studies data to estimate the causal effects of housing prices on urban residents’ subjective well-beings and health status by controlling for individual fixed effects and applying Instrument Variable method. After the endogeneity issue is carefully dealt with, we find negative effects of housing price on people's subjective satisfaction and mental health. The discussions of possible channels show no obvious evidence of Wealth Effect. We find no significant changes in health behaviors, labor supply and leisure decision, and household consumption. We propose that the Demand Effect dominates the influence of housing price in China. The unsatisfied housing demands brought by improving living conditions and the marriage market competition induce depression and then worse mental health in China when housing price is increasing.
